RNZ is looking for a talented and driven journalist to join our newsroom, working two to three days per week. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on breaking news, has an instinct for finding compelling stories, and is passionate about producing high-quality content for both broadcast and digital platforms.

Te Mahi – About the job

As a Weekend Reporter, you’ll be responsible for researching, interviewing, and crafting engaging news and feature stories that engage with audiences across radio and online. You’ll be expected to:

  • Break news and pitch original and compelling story ideas.
  • Report live on air and online from the RNZ news bureau or out in the field.
  • Write sharp, clear news copy and in-depth features and analysis.
  • Contribute to daily and long-term planning, meeting deadlines and editorial standards.
  • Provide multimedia content including audio, visuals, and live updates for all platforms.
  • Maintain a strong network of contacts to source and develop stories.
  • Collaborate with newsroom colleagues and other RNZ teams.
  • Uphold RNZ’s editorial standards of independence, impartiality, and balance.

Ōu Pūkenga - About You

You’ll bring:

  • Proven experience in journalism, ideally across both radio and digital.
  • Strong writing, editing, and voicing skills.
  • Confidence in live reporting and working under pressure.
  • A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills.
  • Familiarity with audio and visual editing tools.
  • A commitment to RNZ’s values and editorial integrity.

Additional Info

  • This role involves shift work across weekends.
  • You may be required to undertake production duties and other assignments as needed.

This is a permanent part-time role which can be based in one of our RNZ news offices, but we are open to flexibility.
