RNZ delivers several radio brands – RNZ National, RNZ Concert and RNZ Pacific across AM, FM and Shortwave radio. AM and FM delivery are critical to RNZ’s lifeline utility role, and we extend this to the Pacific across shortwave during Cyclones and natural disasters.

RNZ owns and operates AM and FM transmission sites across New Zealand, along with a Shortwave transmitter site in the central North Island which has two 100kW transmitters and four antenna curtains. RNZ also carries out AM Radio antenna engineering work for other operators across New Zealand.

Te Mahi – About the job

This role supports the maintenance and auditing of our AM, Shortwave, and FM transmission sites, while also planning, managing, and delivering capital works projects. You’ll play a key role in fault restoration support alongside our maintenance contractor.

RNZ have a major two-year capital works programme ahead, with a strong focus on AM and Shortwave antenna engineering. This is a rare chance to gain specialist experience in the field of antenna engineering full training and mentoring will be provided.

The role includes:

  • On-going Shortwave (High Frequency) Coverage Planning and Monitoring
  • Shortwave Frequency Coordination and Registration with ITU and RSM
  • Shortwave Transmission Scheduling
  • Provision of Support to Third Party Broadcasters across the Pacific
  • Management of Transmission Faults – AM, Shortwave and FM
  • Maintenance and Auditing of RNZ Transmission Networks (AM, Shortwave and FM)
  • AM and Shortwave Antenna Engineering
  • Other General Duties as Required

This role involves occasional night shift work, and travel throughout New Zealand for periods of 1 to 2 weeks at a time.

Ōu Pūkenga - About You

This role is ideal for someone with experience in AM, Shortwave, and FM radio transmission systems who’s keen to expand their skills into AM and Shortwave antenna engineering. It offers the opportunity to play a hands-on role in maintaining and supporting RNZ’s radio transmission networks across New Zealand.

The successful candidate may have some of the following skills/experience:

  • A tertiary qualification in electronics or telecommunications (Required)
  • Current full drivers’ licence (Required)
  • EWRB EST or Electrician registration (Required)
  • Proven extensive experience in radio transmission equipment installation and maintenance work or similar.
  • Qualified to climb structures and/or a knowledge of rigging work 
  • HF propagation modelling experience

RNZ understands that this is a unique role and will provide extensive training and mentoring over 1 to 2 years.
