Te Mahi – About the job
RNZ produces award-winning feature programmes for radio and podcasts, with Country Life as our flagship rural show. We aim to connect with rural New Zealand by telling the stories of its people in ways that inform, entertain and resonate with our audiences.
In this role, you’ll:
- Initiate and deliver strong, original stories that engage and appeal to both urban and rural listeners.
- Prepare and edit audio-rich podcast episodes that immerse listeners in rural New Zealand, highlight characters and shine a light on their communities, work and the issues that impact their lives.
- Write Country Life scripts with clarity and accuracy, calling on a wide knowledge of the primary sector.
- Work effectively and independently within a small team, while also collaborating with the wider RNZ team where your expertise and storytelling can add value.
- Schedule stories in coordination with other team members and plan efficient interview collections.
- Consistently meet weekly deadlines.
- Present Country Life and/or its features with warmth and flair.
- Drive continuous improvement to ensure the programme remains fresh, relevant, and engaging, and continues to grow its audience.
- Champion diversity by ensuring new voices and perspectives are represented and attracted to our stories.
- Uphold RNZ’s reputation for accurate, compelling, and industry-leading programmes and podcasts.
Ōu Pūkenga - About You
We’d love to hear from you if you:
- Have a tertiary qualification in Journalism or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Bring sound knowledge and experience in long-form storytelling and audio production.
- Possess strong knowledge of the rural sector and its communities.
- Show sound story judgement and demonstrated interviewing ability.
- Have proven success in eliciting strong performances from interviewees and production talent.
- Can engage constructively with communities across New Zealand.
- Are proficient in photography and video production.
- Can work independently, while also contributing effectively in small teams.
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Can make timely and effective decisions under pressure.
- Think strategically to enhance the reach and quality of programming.

This role is full time, 40 hours a week, based in the South Island.
