Producer Reporter, First Up

RNZ is New Zealand’s only non-commercial public multimedia organisation and exists solely to serve the public interest by providing unique, impartial services and content to all New Zealanders.

We are seeking a skilled Producer/Reporter to join our First Up team. In this role, you will carry out in-depth research, craft compelling audio packages, and write sharply angled copy for both news and webYou will work with the show’s dedicated production team, Morning Report, Checkpoint, the wider newsroom and digital teams selecting and developing story ideas.

Editorial

  • Research, develop, and pitch original story ideas. 
  • Produce 2–3 engaging audio packages weekly, including on-the-ground reporting. 
  • Write concise, sharply angled news and web copy, ensuring accuracy. 
  • Break news and generate original interview ideas. 
  • Edit pre-recorded interviews and change/alter as required. 
  • Stay well informed on both national and international news stories. 
  • Support programme setup and work collaboratively with other teams. 

Production

  • Source great talent and provide strong and relevant material for the programme and online, adding depth to RNZ’s journalism by including a range of voices
  • Break original and innovative stories for both on-air and online. 
  • Plan and organise logistics for live and pre-recorded interviews. 
  • Troubleshoot digital editing and sound quality issues. 
  • Maintain a diverse contact list for breaking news stories and programme input. 
  • Produce related online content, appropriately enhanced and tailored to our web audience.
  • Respond professionally to listener and digital audience requests in a timely manner

Other

  • Meet deadlines while maintaining the highest standards of quality and accuracy. 
  • Develop strong relationships and collaborate effectively with other kaimahi across different teams. 
  • Actively participate in programme reviews and help implement any changes as required
  • Ensure any public representation maintains RNZ standards and builds on its reputation for independent, impartial and balanced journalism

Ōu Pūkenga - About You

A tertiary qualification in journalism or relevant area is preferred or study towards this coupled with video production experience

Effective working knowledge of;

  • National and international news and current affairs.
  • Live production – on-air, online and visually.
  • The convergence of aural and visual storytelling, e.g. using smart phones and digital recording techniques.
  • Producing “live” programmes of a consistently high quality
  • Organisation and planning including ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • A lateral thinker with ability to come up with fresh story ideas and angles.
  • Experience and ability in networking with business, political, community, cultural and other groups as required
