Investigative Journalist

RNZ is on the hunt for a senior investigative journalist, who is hungry to break agenda-setting stories and land exclusive interviews with newsmakers.

You will have a substantial track record of digging up stories that have resonated with the audience and sent other reporters scrambling to follow.

Your phone will be full of contacts from diverse communities and you will know how to obtain and interpret documents to stand up tips and drill down to the details.

You will be a talented broadcast interviewer, comfortable in front of the camera and behind the mic, and will also have experience in print or digital, writing tight news stories and well-crafted features.

In this role, you will be given the time and support to chase down interviews and stories that matter and then craft them to a high standard. You will also have the scope to work across mediums and platforms, telling some stories with video, some with audio and others as written pieces (and at times, doing all of the above), depending on what will work best for the piece and for the audience. Ditto with the length of your stories; sometimes you’ll produce long form journalism and at other times it will be punchy, hard-hitting news.

You will join the friendly and focused In Depth team, who are based in RNZ’s Auckland office. Ideally, you will be based in Auckland too but we’re less focused on this than getting the right person for the job.
