Director, Investigative & Specialist Content Unit

We’re looking for a dynamic senior journalist with a proven record of breaking stories who’s seeking a new challenge. You’ll be working with and supporting a team of reporters and correspondents to develop RNZ’s multi-media investigative and specialist news and current affairs agenda.
RNZ News tells public interest stories in ways which are relevant, intelligent and engaging. You will be committed to high-quality, impartial journalism and be expected to lead and support our staff to produce coverage that resonates across New Zealand.
You’ll work closely with the Director News Gathering, Director News Programming and Digital Editor to select and resource stories both daily and longer term. You’ll be an expert planner and adept at adding depth and context to breaking news, ensuring a full diversity of voices on any story.
A history of working collaboratively and being able to develop new approaches to help reporters tell their stories in multiple ways is a must. Ideally you will have a background in broadcast and/or print/online and be able to demonstrate flexibility through a range of different skills.
An understanding of news programming requirements, digital deadlines and an enthusiasm for using social platforms to extend the reach of our original journalism will stand you in good stead.
This role will also deputise as Head of News and have a broad involvement in newsroom activities.
Ideal experience and personal skills
- Significant experience as a senior investigative journalist
- Extensive multimedia knowledge e.g. video and web content production
- Expertise in story commissioning and development and project management
- Successful track record in planning, budgeting and expenditure control
