Te Tūranga – The opportunity  

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with New Zealand’s award-winning public media company. At RNZ we aim to strengthen Aotearoa and the Pacific through informative, challenging and entertaining content.

Due to an exciting internal movement, RNZ is looking for a senior editorial leader to drive our daily news coverage across our audio and digital platforms. This is a key role at the centre of our news operations, shaping how our content engages with our audiences on a daily basis.

Te Mahi – About the job

As RNZ’s Day Editor, you’ll lead live news coverage from 6am–2pm, coordinating breaking news, planning and guiding editorial decisions, and making sure our journalism is high quality, compelling, and has impact.

In this role you’ll be responsible for:

  • Lead coordination of live news coverage across digital and audio
  • Coordinate breaking news and editorial priorities
  • Work closely with journalists, editors and news programme teams to deliver high-quality content
  • Actively contribute to editorial planning meetings, prioritising stories & content that resonates with our audience.
  • Monitor the quality of content and make sure it meets RNZ’s editorial standards.
  • Support staff, ensuring journalism and content is fresh and relevant, and recognising achievements in storytelling.

Ōu Pūkenga - About You

We’re looking for a confident senior editorial leader who has a passion for public media and significant experience in broadcasting and multimedia journalism.

What we’re looking for:

  • Ideally a tertiary qualification in journalism, or equivalent experience gained in a relevant role.
  • Proven experience at a senior level in breaking news, editing and visual/audio storytelling
  • Confidence making decisions and sound editorial judgement.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work well and communicate clearly under pressure.
  • Strategic thinking skills and the ability to anticipate audience needs.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and relationship building skills
  • Credible and values driven, with a commitment to the RNZ Charter and Te Tiriti

This is a full-time role based in Auckland or Wellington but we are open to flexibility.
