Jobs at Radio New Zealand Te Reo Irirangi o Aotearoa

Intermediate-Senior Developer

Permanent Full Time

RNZ is looking for an experienced, flexible and communicative software developer with specific experience in Ruby on Rails to join the next phase of our development. We’ve seen staggering growth in our online audience in the past two years and now we want to build on this with great new ways of telling stories.

Working closely with colleagues in digital design, software development, platform support, and solutions architecture, this role contributes to the design and development of all RNZ’s web apps, products and projects plus the ongoing maintenance and improvement of our current databases, apps, systems and code. The role is in the Product and Audience team in the Digital group, which strives to make insights-driven, user-focused digital products audiences love.

We’re looking for someone with plenty of experience: 7+ years’ development experience with a minimum of 5 working specifically on web applications built in Ruby on Rails on a Linux environment, and solid exposure to at least one other language, who can work with multiple technologies at speed and contribute to building effective software development methodologies and environments. Our current technology stacks:

-  are primarily bespoke Ruby on Rails apps, with some PHP in use as well;

-  use MySQL and Postgres databases;

-  use Solr for Search functionality;

-  use Varnish for caching;

-  are primarily hosted in-house, with some AWS resources;

-  use Sass for styling; and

-  use a mix of Vanilla JS, jQuery, Backbone and React for UI scripting.

We use Git for version control and are increasingly moving to devops practices, including Circle CI, test automation, Vagrant for consistent dev environments and Ansible for environment scripting.

As we are a small team our ideal candidate is a flexible team player with broad experience in relational database design and management, systems design and integration, APIs, web application security principles, testing (automated, unit and UI), excellent knowledge of common web standards and principles and expertise in content management platforms.

We’re also after somebody with demonstrable skill writing secure, well-structured, scalable, reusable and maintainable backend code to a high standard. This means 7+ years experience in developing, coding, testing, and debugging new software (as well as making enhancements to existing/legacy software), version control (preferably GIT), and some experience in transitioning to Hybrid/cloud environments.

On a personal level, we’re after someone with great ideas and problem-solving skills (including backwards engineering), the know-how to recommend & implement the right frameworks, tools & libraries for the job at hand, a willingness to share their knowledge, document systems and record issue management, and the ability to adapt and communicate in a variety of PM and product environments who can visualise and communicate solutions and ideas clearly and collaborate with content and design teams to define and implement digital solutions, and to ensure the technical viability of UI/UX designs.

Please note: A complete application includes your covering letter and a CV.
