About this role
The Henare te Ua Māori Journalism Internship is a paid twelve-month position at RNZ for two Māori graduates who are passionate about producing Māori news stories for on-air and online while gaining experience in researching, reporting, writing and presenting with the Māori news team.
You’ll learn about the inner workings of RNZ with the goal to produce Māori content for all RNZ platforms, with the opportunity to work in all areas of RNZ throughout the internship including, digital, music, radio and operations, to widen and advance your skillset.
You will be supported and mentored by our Māori News Director and other senior staff at RNZ, while being under the korowai of Te Manu Kōrihi.
The internship recognises the outstanding veteran Māori broadcaster Henare te Ua whose career spanned four decades. His leadership and remarkable communication skills marked him as an exceptional broadcaster. He provides an inspiration for this internship.

This internship is for someone who is passionate about Māori journalism and good story-telling and possesses a relevant qualification.
However, RNZ will consider applicants who do not possess a qualification but someone who wants to practice the craft of journalism and tell stories that explore and reflect Te Ao Māori.
The primary qualifications for applicants will be:
- A strong understanding of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori.
- Good writing, multi-media, radio, visual and social media skills.
RNZ is a leader in delivering important stories across multiple digital platforms while continuing to build on our excellence in public service broadcasting and multimedia to further develop lifelong relationships with the people of Aotearoa.
